God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:27-28)
We were made to worship God, rule His world, and fill it with His glory. Mankind was created to be God’s Kingdom on Earth.
But as we have decided to worship and serve the creation rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25), we have surrendered the power that God entrusted to us and given it over to idols. Now, instead of being God’s rulers on earth, we have become slaves to sin, and the consequence of this sin is death.
For as by a man came death, by a Man has come also the Resurrection of the Dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when He delivers the Kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:21-25)
Christ died for our sins that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. (Hebrews 2:14-15) His resurrection from the dead guarantees our own resurrection, where we no longer have to fear death. When we turn away from our idolatry and turn back to worship our Creator, we become children of God (John 1:12). Only then can we fulfill our original purpose to be God’s Kingdom on Earth. This is why we pray: Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
